Rhododendron / AzaleaVARIETIES: Azaleas - R. simsii R. X obtusum MAXIMUM HEIGHT: 1 - 2 feet BLOOMING: Winter and spring LIGHT: At least 4 hours of bright indirect sunlight per day. TEMPERATURE: Night = 40 - 55°F (4 - 13°C) Day = 68°F (24°C) or higher WATERING: Keep the soil moist at all times. Yet sure not the soil to stand in water. It is best if you use soft water. You can get soft water by collecting rain water or by boiling water and allowing it to cool to room temperature before using. HUMIDITY: Prefers high humidity. To achieve this, rest the pot on some stones in a dish filled with water. Make sure the water does not submerge the stones and touch the bottom of the pot. This will increase the humidity directly around the plant due to the evaporation of the water in the dish. FERTILIZING: Fertilize at 2 week intervals from the time the flowers fade in spring until new buds begin to form in the summer. Do not fertilize for the remainder of the year. If the leaves lose their deep rich green color, water the soil monthly using a solution of 1 ounce iron sulfate to 2 gallons of water. Or use iron chelate and follow insturctions well. SUBSTRATE: MAKE SURE THE SUBSTRATE CONTAINS NO TRACE OF LIME! Make sure it is ericaceous (lime-free) Use a mixture of 2 parts peat moss, 1 part potting soil, and 1 part sharp sand or perlite. PROPAGATION: Propagate from stem cuttings of new growth. REPOTTING: Spring and early summer. |
