Insects and Pests
Aphids
One very simple and effective way to remove aphids is to mix some
powdered milk in some warm water in a spray container.
Mist the affected areas and allow to dry. The milk will dry
and kill the aphids. It is a very safe and cheap solution.
Plants that are very suseptable to Aphids are:
Dieffenbachia,
Fatshedera,
Ferns, Ivies

Whiteflies
Wash the leaves with a strong spray of tepid water, making sure to cleanse the
undersides thoroughly. For serious infestation, treat with rotenone or pyrethrum, or
take plant outdoors and spray with malathion from a distance of 18 inches. Let dry and
rinse with clear tepid water.
Plants that are very suseptable to Whiteflies are:
Begonia,
Coleus,
Ferns |
Two-Spotted Spider Mites
Wash small plants in the sink using a strong spray of tepid water. Large plants should
be wiped with a soft soapy cloth, then rinsed. For serious infestations, use difocol or
tetradifon, or take the plant outdoors and spray with malathion. Let dry and rinse with
clear water. If problem persists, destroy the plant.
Plants that are very suseptable to Spider Mites are:
Asparagus Fern, Cactii,
False Aralia,
Ferns, Ivies,
Schefflera

Scales
Gently scrub the scales off the leaves, using warm soapy water and a small brush. Then
rinse using tepid water. For serious infestation, treat with rotenone or pyrethrum, or
take plant outdoors and spray with malathion from a distance of 18 inches. Let dry and
rinse with clear tepid water.
Plants that are very suseptable to Scales are:
Aloea, Aralia,
Croton,
Ferns, Dracaena, Ferns,
India-Rubber Tree,
Ivies, Palms

Mealy Bugs
Soak a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and dab it onto the mealy bugs. They will die
and fall off. Then wash the plant with warm soapy water and rinse.
Plants that are very suseptable to Mealy bugs are:
Cacti, Cissus,
Coleus,
Croton,
Dracaena,
Ferns, Palms |
