Begonia

VARIETIES: Classification for begonias is very difficult due to the
diverse number of hybrids. General, the classification
of begonias are broken down into three classes:
Rex begonias - Very colourful leaves
		Rhizomatous begonias - Creeping plants
		Basket begonias - Trailing stems

MAXIMUM HEIGHT:	Rex begonias - 12 - 18 inches
		Rhizomatous begonias - 1 - 2 feet
		Basket begonias - 6-20 inches

SUBSTRATE:	1 part loam, 1 peat moss or part leaf mold, 1 part perlite or vermiculite,
		1 part sharp sand.
OR! use an equal mixture of general potting soil and sharp sand.
To each pail full of either mixture, add:
		- 1 tablespoon of bone meal
		- 1 tablespoon of ground lime-stone

LIGHT: Prefers direct sunlight for more that 4 hours per day except in
more southern climates where light intensity may be too great.
Or where artificial and natural light average 400 foot-candles.
But will grow fairly well in bright indirect light.

TEMPERATURE: Night = 60 - 65°F (16 - 18°C)
		Day = 70 - 75°F (21 - 24°C)

WATERING: Keep soil barely moist at all times. Begonias are very sensitive
		to overwatering.

FERTILIZING: Wait 1 year months to fertilize new plants,
Mature plants: - From midwinter to late fall, fertilize every two months
with standard house-plant fertilizer diluted to half of its
			minimum recommended strength.
Do not fertilize for the rest of the year.

PROPAGATING:	Any season from stem cuttings. Begonias containing rhizomes can be
propagated in spring or fall by dividing buried rhizomes.

REPOTTING:	Any season but its better to do it in spring.
