VARIETIES: 	Umbrella plant -  C. alternifolius
		Dwarf umbrella plant - C. diffusus, also called C. laxus
		Pygmy papyrus -  C. haspan viviparus
		
MAXIMUM LENGTH:	Umbrella plant -  4 feet
		Dwarf umbrella plant - 12 inches
		Pygmy papyrus - 18 inches

SUBSTRATE:	1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand.
		Do not add any kind of fertilizer.
		OR! use general purpose potting soil.
		
LIGHT: 		4 or more hours of direct sunlight. Or, where only artificial
		ligth is available, provide at least 800 foot candles over a 
		12 hour period.
		Will also do well in curtain filtered/indirect sunlight

pH:		This plant requires a pH of 7 (neutral). Purchase a pH test kit and 
		measure the pH of the soil. If the soil is too acidic (pH 8 - pH 14)
		add limestone to reduce the pH down to 7. If the soil si too alkaline
		(pH 1 - 6) then add sulphur to bring the pH up to 7.
			
TEMPERATURE: 	Night = 50 - 55°F (10 - 13°C)
		Day = 68 - 72°F (20 - 22°C)

WATERING: 	Keep soil wet at all times. Place the pot in a dish filled with water.

FERTILIZING: 	Wait 3 - 4 months before fertilizing newly purchased plants.
		Mature plants - fertilize weekly from early spring to late summer with
			house-plant fertilizer diluted to half of its recommended strength. 
			Do not fertilize for the remainder of the year.			

PROPAGATING:	Propagate by dividing the roots at any season.

REPOTTING:	Early spring.
