DavalliaVARIETIES: Deer's-foot fern - D. canariensis Fiji davallia - D. fejeensis Ball fern - D. mariesii Squirrel's-foot fern - D. trichomanoides MAXIMUM HEIGHT: 12 - 18 inches, except the ball fern which grows 6 - 8 inches. SUBSTRATE: 1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand, 1 part finely ground fir bark. To each gallon pailfull of this mixture add 2 tablespoons of bone meal. OR! a mixture composed of 1 part general purpose potting soil, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold. LIGHT: Does best in the shadowless light of a north window. Or in areas where only artificial light is available, be sure to provide at least 150 foot candles. TEMPERATURE: Night = 50 - 65°F (10 - 18°C) Day = 65 - 85°F (18 - 29°C) WATERING: Keep soil barely moist at all times. FERTILIZING: Wait 6 months before fertilizing newly purchased plants. Mature plants - fertilize every 6 months with standard house-plant fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. PROPAGATING: Propagate at any season dividing the rhizomes you find just under the substrate surface. Place in a shallow pot with the appropriate substrate and pin down by using wire looped around the rhizome with both of the wire ends pushed into the substrate. REPOTTING: Any season. |
