Japanese Fatsia

Fatsia

VARIETIES: 	Japanese fatsia, Japanese aralia - F. japonica, also called
				Aralia japonica and Aralia sieboldii
				
MAXIMUM HEIGHT:	4 or more feet

SUBSTRATE:	1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand.
		To each gallon pailfull of this mixture add:
		- 1½ teaspoons of 20% superphosphate
		- 1 tablespoon of ground lime-stone
		- 2 teaspoons of 5-10-5 fertilizer.
		OR! use general purpose potting soil.
						
LIGHT: 		Prefers direct sunlight for more that 4 hours per day.
		Will do well in bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight.
		Or where only artificial light is available, be sure to provide 
		at least 800 foot-candles over 12 hours per day.
					
TEMPERATURE: 	Night = 40 - 55°F (2 - 13°C)
		Day = 65°F (18°C) or lower
			
WATERING: 	Keep the soil barely moist.
		
FERTILIZING: 	Wait 4-6 months to fertilize new plants, 
		Mature plants - fertilize twice a year in early spring and early summer.

PRUNING:	To give old plants a boost, cut back plant in spring to stimulate new
		growth. Also pinch off any flower buds to encourage larger leaves.
			
PROPAGATING:	Propagate in spring from new shoots.

REPOTTING:	Early spring.
