FittoniaVARIETIES: Silver-nerved fittonia, mosaic plant - F. argyroneura Red-nerved fittonia - F. verschaffeltii MAXIMUM LENGTH: 6 - 8 inches long SUBSTRATE: 1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand and ½ part crushed charcoal. OR! us a mixture of equal parts potting soil and sharp sand. To each gallon pailfull of either mixture add: - 1 tablespoon of ground bone meal - 1 tablespoon of ground lime-stone LIGHT: Shadowless light of a north window. Or, where only artificial light is available, provide at least 150 foot candles. TEMPERATURE: Night = 50 - 55°F (10 - 13°C) Day = 68 - 72°F (20 - 22°C) HUMIDITY: 50% or higher. To achieve this, rest the pot on some stones in a dish filled with water. Make sure the water does not submerge the stones and touch the bottom of the pot. This will increase the humidity directly around the plant due to the evaporation of the water in the dish. WATERING: Allow soil to become almost dry between thorough waterings. FERTILIZING: Wait 3 - 4 months before fertilizing newly purchased plants. Mature plants - fertilize montly with house-plant fertilizer diluted to half of its recommended strength. PROPAGATING: Propagate from stem cuttings in spring or early summer. REPOTTING: Any season. |
