MonsteraVARIETIES: Monstera, Swiss cheese plant, cut-leaved or split-leaved philodendron, ceriman, hurricane plant - M. deliciosa, also called Philodendron pertusum SEE ALSO Philodendron MAXIMUM HEIGHT: Monstera are jungle vines, and can grow almost to indefinite length. SUBSTRATE: 1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand. To each gallon pailfull of this mixture add: - 1½ teaspoons of 20% superphosphate - 1 tablespoon of ground lime-stone - 2 teaspoons of 5-10-5 fertilizer. OR! use general purpose potting soil LIGHT: Bright indirect or curtain filtered sunlight. If only artificial light is available, be sure to provide at least 400 foot candles. TEMPERATURE: Night = 65 - 70°F (18 - 21°C) Day = 75 - 85°F (24 - 29°C) Plants will tolerate temperatures below 60°F (16°C), but will not produce new growth. WATERING: Keep soil barely at all times. HUMIDITY: 60% humidity is essential. Keep the plants on a tray filled with pebbles and water, but don't let it touch the water. FERTILIZING: Wait 4 - 6 months to fertilize new plants. Mature plants - fertilize twice every year in early spring and early summer. PROPAGATING: Propagate at any season from stem cuttings, sections of main stem, air layering or by seed. |
