PileaVARIETIES: Aluminum plant, watermelon pilea - P. cadierei Panamiga, Pan-American friendship plant - P. crassifolia, P. involucrat, also called P. spruceana Silver panamiga - P. pubescens Black-leaved panamiga - P. repens Silver Tree panamiga - P. 'Silver Tree' MAXIMUM HEIGHT: Most grow no more than 10 inches. Silver Tree panamiga will grow up to 12 inches. SUBSTRATE: 1 part loam, 2 part peat moss, 1 part sharp sand To each gallon pailfull of this mixture add: - 1½ teaspoons of 20% superphosphate - 1 tablespoon of ground lime-stone - 2 teaspoons of 5-10-5 fertilizer. OR! use a mixture of equal parts general purpose potting soil and peat moss. LIGHT: Bright indirect sunlight. If only artificial light is available, provide at least 400 foot candles. TEMPERATURE: Night = 60 - 65°F (16 - 18°C) Day = 75 - 85°F (24 - 29°C) WATERING: Keep soil barely moist at all times. FERTILIZING: Wait 2 - 4 months to fertilize unestablished plants. Mature plants - fertilize every 2 months using standard house plant fertilizer diluted to half of its recommended strength. PROPAGATING: Propagate from stem cuttings or dividing the roots in early spring. REPOTTING: Early spring. Make sure the new soil is compacted very hard between the old soil and the new pot. |
