RhapisVARIETIES: Large lady palm, broad-leaved lady palm - R. excelsa, also called R. aspera and R. flabelliformis Slender lady palm - R. humilis MAXIMUM HEIGHT: around 5 feet SUBSTRATE: 1 part loam, 1 part peat moss or leaf mold, 1 part sharp sand, and ½ part well-rotted or dried cow manure. To each gallon pailfull of this mixture add 2 tablespoons of bone meal. OR! use potting soil specially formulated for African violets LIGHT: Bright indirect sunlight. If only artificial light is available, provide at least 400 foot candles. TEMPERATURE: Night = 50 - 55°F (10 - 13°C) Day = 68 - 72°F (20 - 22°C) WATERING: Keep soil wet at all times but not such that it is standing in water. FERTILIZING: Wait until the following spring to fertilize newly purchased plants. Mature plants - fertilize every month from early spring to summer. PROPAGATING: Propagate at any season from young shoots or suckers growing up from the base of the plant or from seed. REPOTTING: Early spring. |
