Root CareRoot care is another area most people tend to forget about. Since people rarely see the roots, its very easy to forget about proper care for that part of the plant. For most plants, it is important to make sure that the plant does not overgrow its pot. Your first clue that this is happening is to simply pull the root ball out of the pot and inspect for crowded roots. Roots may begin to grow out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. This is a clear sign that the plant is looking for more soil. Something else to keep in mind is the fact that most plant roots not only need fertilizing and water but they also need air. This is why it is not healthy to keep the soil of MOST plants soaked in water. Roots need air pockets in the soil for the transport of certain gases. Unfortunately, indoor plants don't have the added luxury of beneficial insects and worms to aerate the soil. So it is important to water appropriately and to repot when necessary |
